Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center

WFUBMC is a tertiary care, level-one trauma center serving a four state area and is the primary teaching hospital for the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. We are the primary referral hospital for 26 surrounding counties. There are approved training programs in all specialty areas with a total house staff complement of 500 and 400 total full time faculty. Our emergency department (ED) sees in excess of 90,000 patients annually, 26.5% of which are pediatric emergency department visits. The high acuity of our patient population is reflected in a ~25% admission rate, of which 76% go to monitored beds (ICU, CCU, IMC, acute care, telemetry). Up to 50% of our hospital's admissions are from our ED. Our trauma center continues to be one of the busiest trauma centers in North Carolina.

Our state-of-the-art 30,000+ square foot ED built in 1996 features a total of 60 beds with separate areas for adult, pediatric, fast track, and psychiatric patients. A five bed trauma resuscitation area is equipped with portable x-ray and ultrasound capabilities, as well as a CT scanner within the ED. All other acute care beds are equipped with full monitoring capabilities including pulse oximetry and continuous cardiac and blood pressure monitoring. A slit lamp, fiber optic scopes, computers and ultrasound machines are permanent ED equipment. A 12-bed ED clinical decision/observation unit is available one floor above our ED and is staffed by the department of emergency medicine.

The Emergency Department has full time radiographic support including 24-hour in house radiologists and our own 64-slice “light speed” CT scanner located in the ED. Ancillary personnel in the department include a full time dedicated nursing staff of 50+, most of whom are CEN certified and career ED nurses.  In addition there are ample other ancillary personnel including radiology techs, respiratory therapists and patient assistants to allow the house staff to function as physicians, not technicians.

Our department is one of two paramedic base stations for medical control of EMS within the city. We serve as a major training facility for medical students, physician assistants, paramedics and EMTs. AirCare, our busy helicopter service, makes 1000+ runs annually. The hospital has a total of 75 ICU beds including a 9 bed Pediatric ICU and 6 bed burn unit as well as 24 operating rooms.

WFUBMC "points of excellence" includes being ranked among the nation's top 50 hospitals by U.S. News & World Reports. Patient satisfaction scores at WFUBMC are among the highest in the nation according to the health care industry's top satisfaction management and improvement firm. The hospital ranks in the top one percent among its peer groups, including elite academic teaching hospitals and hospitals with 600 or more beds.
