Dr. Meredith received his Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics from Emory University and his Doctor of Medicine degree from Bowman Gray School of Medicine. A native of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, he completed his residencies in general surgery and cardiothoracic surgery at The North Carolina Baptist Hospitals, Inc. He completed a fellowship in Trauma/Critical Care at Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital in Portland, Oregon in 1986. He joined the Medical Center in 1987.
Dr. Meredith is the Richard T. Myers Professor of Surgery and Chairman of the Department of General Surgery with a cross-appointment at the Institute for Regenerative Medicine. He is also the General Surgery Residency Program Director and Chief of Surgery of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center.
Dr. Meredith is Medical Director of Trauma Programs of the American College of Surgeons and Treasurer of the Southern Surgical Association. He serves on the Board of Directors of the American Board of Surgery and for the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and on the Membership Committee for the Halsted Society. He is also a member of the American Surgical Association, the Southeastern Surgical Congress, and the Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma (EAST).
