Policy Advocacy Training Highlights

The NCCI Coordinating Staff was pleased to provide this training to approximately 60 individuals and 25 coalitions from across NC. There were several coalition groups focused on various aspects of substance abuse prevention:

·         PUD

·         SPARC

·         NCCI

·         CPR

The training involved two different tracks to provide participants with the different levels of policy advocacy.

§  The larger group received a basic level course which provided participants with an overview of environmental approaches and a beginner level of understanding of policy advocacy.

§  A separate track was organized for campus-community coalitions participating in the SPARC intervention (Study to Prevent Alcohol-Related Consequences). SPARC is a community trial being conducted by Wake Forest University School of Medicine.  These campus coalitions received advanced training on policy advocacy from Michael Sparks who went presented a different policy advocacy training for this group in February 2008. The subsequent training in June was a follow-up to this training.

o   The training was presented by our expert trainers, Sharon O’Hara and Michael Sparks. They are both with the Center for community Action & Training located in Valley, California.
