Orthopaedic Sports Medicine
Sports Medicine is a specialty practice that provides care for athletic and recreational injuries sustained by people of all ages. Today's athlete can be a mother interested in staying fit, a little league baseball player or a senior citizen who golfs on the weekend. These people in addition to high school, collegiate and professional athletes benefit from the specialty care of sports medicine professionals.
At Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, therapists, family practitioners and orthopaedic surgeons specializing in sports medicine are able to treat and rehabilitate athletes whose sports related injuries were once career-ending. Drs. Daryl Rosenbaum and Heath Thornton, Family Practitioners and Drs. Gary Poehling, David Martin, Cristin Ferguson, Orthopaedic Surgeons, specialize in non-operative and operative treatment of injured athletes of all ages. Drs. Jeffrey Shilt and John Frino, Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgeons, specialize in sports medicine in children and adolescents. Dr. Martin serves as team physician for the Wake Forest University Varsity Athletic Programs, the Winston-Salem Warthogs, the Winston-Salem State University Varsity Athletic Programs and Forsyth Country Day School. Dr. Shilt served as team physician of the 2003 USA Triathlon World Championship and Medical Director of the 2006 Kids for Kids Triathlon.
