First Annual Patient Advocate Award

Cancer Services Inc. has announced they will be sponsoring the first annual Patient Advocate Award.  The award will be presented to a patient advocate who is a positive influence in the lives of those with cancer on Thursday, April 11 at Allegacy Federal Credit Union Headquarters.  For questions or nomination forms, contact Linda Miller at 760-9983 or 1-800-228-7421 (NC only).  The deadline for nominations is March 1.

 

Breastfeeding Classes Available

The Women’s Center offers breastfeeding classes taught by Certified Lactation Consultants.  The classes are held in the Women’s Center at 2000 West First Street, Suite 101.  This course will begin April 4 and be held every Tuesday for four weeks from 6 to 8 pm.  Registration is $25, which includes a book Breastfeeding: A Parent’s Guide and refreshments.  Participants with perfect attendance are entered into a drawing for a breastfeeding adapter kit (courtesy of the Women’s Health Center).  For more information or to register, contact ActionHealth at 713-8001.

 

Last Chance for Workshop

The WHISC project will offer “Counseling for Change: Smoking Cessation for Women of Childbearing Age” one last time on Friday, March 22, 2002, from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm at the Sticht Center.  This free workshop is funded by the Duke Endowment Grant, and workshop materials, lunch, and breaks are all provided.  Pre-registration is required and space is limited.  For more information and/or to register, contact Carol Bledsoe at 713-7003 or cbledsoe@wfubmc.edu.

 

Women’s Health Seminar Series

March 12, 2002 – “Women’s Health Pilot Grant Winners Day: An Update,” presented by Roger Anderson, PhD, Assistant Professor, Section on Social Sciences and Health Policy, Department of Public Health Sciences and Sharon Jackson, PhD, Assistant Professor, Section on Epidemiology, Department of Public Health Sciences.

April 9, 2002 – “Orthopedic Injuries in Women,” presented by Elizabeth A. Arendt, MD, Associate Professor, Department of Orthopedic Surgery, University of Minnesota.

May 14, 2002 – “Breast Cancer and Physical Activity,” presented by Shannon Mihalko, PhD, Assistant Professor, Health and Exercise Sciences, Wake Forest University.
