Limited Submission Funding Programs

Overview

Some funding agencies limit the number of proposals or applications that they will accept from any one institution.  To prevent any potential disqualifications of submissions coming from Wake Forest University Health Sciences (WFUHS), the Office of Research has established the following guidelines:

Upcoming Program Deadlines
Programs will be listed on the limited submission calendar in the month that the first internal (WFUHS) deadline occurs.  Please check the calendar regularly since new programs and information will be added as it becomes available to us.

Letter of Intent

Anyone wishing to submit a proposal under a limited competition must send a letter of intent to (ktetraul@wfubmc.edu) in the Office of Research.  Please send the Intent Form as soon as you know you have an interest in the funding program and no later than the first internal deadline.
Download Letter of Intent Template

Internal Competition

Potential applicants will be notified within 2-3 business days following the letter of intent deadline if there will be a need for an internal competition to select the allowed number of proposals to be sent forward to the sponsor.  If the number of intent forms does not exceed the number of allowable submissions, an internal competition will not be conducted.

Internal Pre-Proposal

If there are more interested applicants than the sponsor’s limit allows, the Office of Research will coordinate an internal competition to select the proposals that will be recommended to go forward.  In this case a brief proposal will be required. These pre-proposals should be sent as e-mail attachments to (ktetraul@wfubmc.edu) typically, the pre-proposal requirements will be tailored to the needs of the specific program but will contain the following:

1.  Project Summary (1 page)

Include a description of the significance and impact of the study as defined by the program announcement

        2.  Project Description (2-3 pages)

·         Significance – what important problem is being addressed

·         Methods and Approach – Describe the experimental design and methods used to accomplish the objectives of the project

·         Innovation – Does the project employ novel concepts, approaches or methods

·         Investigator qualifications – training and experience in the work proposed

·         Environment – Describe resources and institutional resources supporting the project

3.  NIH Format Bio-sketch

Any special instructions for preparing the pre-proposal will be sent to those who have submitted a letter of intent once the need for an internal competition has been established.

 Review Committee

Proposals are reviewed and ranked by an internal review committee consisting of faculty members.  Committee members are selected based on expertise and experience.  Proposals are evaluated on how well each meets the selection criteria guidelines outlined in the program announcement.  Applicants will be ranked using a 1-5 scale, 1 being the highest.  You will be notified in approximately 10 business days of the results.
