INTRODUCTION

The Intramural Research Support Program (IRSC) is composed of approximately 20 faculty members with a wide range of research expertise. The committee, whose members are appointed by the Dean for three-year terms, is divided into two review panels. Its principal responsibility is to perform scientific review of intramural research grant applications submitted by the faculty. In addition, the IRSC provides guidance and expertise for ad-hoc review of other School research grants, such as Women's Health and other special research initiatives. There are four types of research applications routinely reviewed by the IRSC.

Pilot Research Grants. These grants provide up to $20,000 over 12 months to faculty at any rank and seniority level to establish a new or strengthen an existing research program, thereby enhancing the probability of obtaining new extramural funding.  Pilot Research Grants

Interim Funding Grants. This program is designed to assist faculty who have an ongoing extramural grant (e.g., NIH, NSF, DOD), but whose funding has been interrupted by an unsuccessful competitive renewal. The size of the award will depend on individual circumstances but cannot exceed $45,000 for 12 months.  Interim Funding Grants

Cross-Campus Collaborative Grants. The goal of this program is to stimulate pilot research projects between the School of Medicine and Reynolda campus faculty that will generate extramural funding for both institutions. Funds are restricted to collaborative efforts between full-time faculty (including 9 month appointments) and research staff with adjunct faculty appointments.  Cross-Campus Collaborative Research Fund

Faculty Foreign Travel Awards. The goal of this program is to enhance WFUHS faculty access to scientific meetings and other scientific and clinical activities held overseas. The foreign travel must enhance the research goals or standing of the faculty member or, for clinical faculty, result in the acquisition of a new clinical technique or practice skill. The program is open to all faculty members who can justify the benefits of foreign travel and who have no other existing source of travel funds.  Faculty Foreign Travel Awards

IRSC Grant Application Deadlines

Deadlines for application submissions and reviews are established prior to the start of each academic year. There are three annual deadlines for Pilot and Interim Funding grants and one deadline for Cross Campus and Faculty Foreign Travel Awards, usually in early spring.  Deadlines
