TableEditor Software

Computer programmers at the Center for Human Genomics at Wake Forest University Health Sciences have developed a novel, user-friendly software tool to graphically edit tables with thousands of rows and columns.  Such large tables are becoming more and more common in modern research, such as genetic data from large human genome study projects.   Existing electronic spreadsheet products are limited in the size of the tables, and often spreadsheets are limited to 256 columns.  In contrast, the TableEditor can easily edit a 161MB data file consisting of 5,500 rows and 10,000 columns!    In addition to being able to work with enormous tables, researchers at the Center designed the software to include many essential features such as:

v    Ability to support all hardware platforms: Unlike many spreadsheet applications that will only work on a single hardware platform, TableEditor can run on Windows, Unix, Linux, Mac OS, and many others.

v    User-friendly Interface: TableEditor uses intuitive graphical icons and dropdown menus for features such as inserting and deleting columns and rows, and also includes a help system.

v    Ability to edit multiple tables concurrently: The Center found this capability essential in the analysis of multiple human genome study tables.

v    Additional features: The TableEditor uses common features such as Cut, Copy, Paste, Undo, and Redo.

This software has been successfully used in many projects throughout the Center for Human Genomics but the software can be applied to any application using tables consisting of thousands of columns and/ or rows.
