image001_1003140512Physician Scientist Training Program (7-Year Pathway)

The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine offers a residency position for a medical school graduate interested in pursuing a career in academic Orthopaedic Surgery.

This 7-year program begins with two years of laboratory work followed by the standard 5-year Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center (WFUBMC) Orthopedic Surgery residency.

In the first two years the research fellow will be guided by a Clinical and Basic Science Mentor. Duties include the design and execution of clinical and basic science research, submitting abstracts and grant applications, and participation in Orthopaedic journal clubs and morning conference. The Physician Scientist will have no ward or call responsibilities during the 2 year research fellowship.

This program is a categorical seven year program. It is designed as a comprehensive Orthopaedic Surgery residency position and the clinical training is identical to the 5-year categorical position. This position is filled outside the NRMP match.

Application Requirements:

Candidates are asked to apply via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS).  There is not a separate program code for the Physician Scientist Program.  Candidates are asked to send a short letter expressing their interest to Thomas L. Smith, Ph.D. (see below).  Once that is received, your file will receive consideration for both the traditional (5 year) residency program and the Physician Scientist Program (7 years).  All candidates must be U.S. Graduates or have received ECFMG certification.  Application deadline for the Physician Scientist Program:  November 1.

This position is filled outside of and prior to the residency Match.  The NRMP is fully aware of and has sanctioned this practice.
