Pediatrics

  • Predictors of Outcomes in Cerebral Palsy - The specific aim of this study is to determine the clinical and psychosocial factors that are predictive of a pediatric cerebral palsy patient's health-related quality of life and health status. The study also evaluates family functioning and health-related quality of life as it relates to family members with a chronic medical condition.
  • Long-term data about pediatric patients who receive intrathecal baclofen pumps to manage spasticity is being collected in order to provide long term follow-up of the function and health-related quality of life of these patients before and after pump implantation.
  • Spinal Deformity in Patients with Spasticity Treated with Intrathecal Baclofen - The specific aim of this study is to evaluate the behavior of spinal deformity in severely-involved cerebral palsy patients treated with intrathecal baclofen.
  • Long-term Follow-up of Pediatric Spine Patients - The aim of this study is to collect long-term follow-up from pediatric patients who have had spinal surgery for idiopathic scoliosis. This will provide future patients and spine surgeons with a greater understanding of the long-term outcomes of pediatric spine surgery.
  • The use of botulinum A toxin for the management of spasticity in pediatric cerebral palsy patients was initiated in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 1988. Patients treated with intramuscular botulinum A toxin injections are followed in order to obtain long-term information about the management of spasticity using neuromuscular blockade and its effects on the natural history of cerebral palsy.
