Annual Master Project Symposium

Friday, April 4, 2008

The Annual Master Project Symposium of the Department of Physician Assistant Studies of Wake Forest University School of Medicine was held on Friday, April 4, 2008 from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm on the Bowman Gray Campus of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. The Master Project Symposium is a showcase for the two year research investment made by Physician Assistant (PA) students. The Symposium consisted of a Keynote Address, concurrent student presentations, and a poster exhibit. The University was very excited about this year’s Master Project Symposium and proud of the work completed by the Master of Medical Science Degree graduates in the Class of 2008.

Research poster presentations were reviewed by WFUSM students, faculty and guests.  Four concurrent oral presentation sessions were scheduled in the morning and afternoon of the Symposium day.  Each project was subjected to faculty, peer and investigator review.

Keynote Speaker:
Lisa Huggins Oxendine, PA-C, MAEd

This year the Keynote Speaker was Lisa Huggins Oxendine.  She wrote and published The Pink Begonia Sister’s Caribbean Retreat, the story of three Native American women from southeastern North Carolina who turn 40 and deal with breast cancer before deciding to live differently in the Caribbean.  In 2008, Lisa’s goal was – Pink Begonias Around the World, a project to increase reading, sharing, and the feeling of community around the world.  The project encourages folks to read and share a story with a message which can positively influence lives.  Lisa earned a BS and MAEd degree from UNC-Pembroke and a Physician Assistant Certificate from Wake Forest University School of Medicine.  In 2007, Lisa “retired” from medicine to pursue writing full-time.
