Eugene R. Bleecker, MD I am a Professor of Medicine, Pediatrics and Head of the Section of Pulmonary, Critical Care, Allergy and Immunologic Diseases at Wake Forest University School of Medicine and am the Co-Director of the Center for Human Genomics.
After obtaining a Bachelor of Arts degree at New York University, I earned my medical degree, cum laude, at the State University of New York, Downstate Medical Center, in Brooklyn, New York and completed an internship in medicine at the State University of New York, Kings County Hospital, Downstate Medical Center, and a residency in medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. I served fellowships in pulmonary diseases in the Department of Medicine and the Cardiovascular Research Institute at the University of California in San Francisco. My major research interests include the genetics of allergy, asthma, and complex diseases, pharmacologic interventions in obstructive pulmonary disease, and mechanisms of bronchial inflammation and hyperresponsiveness. I am a member of several professional societies, including the American Thoracic Society, the American Federation for Medical Research, the American Society of Human Genetics, and the American College of Chest Physicians. In addition, I am a fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and have served on a variety of committees as a principal investigator on several National Institutes of Health–funded research projects on the genetics of asthma and bronchial hyperresponsiveness as well as on clinical and basic scientific studies on asthma and COPD, including current studies on the Severe Asthma Research Program and Asthma Clinical Research Network. I am co-director of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s yearly short course on Genetic Approaches to Complex Heart, Lung and Blood Diseases and also a past member of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and the National Asthma Education and Prevention Program Expert Panel on the Diagnosis and Management of Asthma. I am author or coauthor of more than 260 abstracts and over 240 scientific articles, reviews, and book chapters. |
