Gregory Hawkins, PhD

I grew up in Shelby, NC and graduated from Shelby High School with all intentions of having a career in music, most specifically as a percussionist.  In fact, I was a declared music major at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before changing my major to chemistry.  I graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1984 with a BA in Chemistry and entered the University of Maryland at College Park to study biochemistry, where my I was most interested in the researching the origins of life, with a goal to work with NASA and space probes.  However, due to a turn of events and some good fortune, I was introduced to recombinant DNA techniques and learned that taking DNA apart was more fun.  I graduated from the University of Maryland at College Park in 1990 and was hired as a post-doc at Organon Technika in Rockville Maryland where I developed immunoconjugates using cloned human enzymes and human monoclonal antibodies to specifically target cancer.  I have three patents for producing immunoconjugates.  In 1992, I moved to Nebraska for a second post-doctoral position in molecular genetics with the US Department of Agriculture at the Roman L. Hruska Meat Animal Research Center where I worked to help develop the first genetic maps for cattle, pigs, and sheep.  Since 1994, I have worked for three biotech companies:  American Breeders Service (a cattle genetic company), Madison, WI (1994-1996), Epicentre Technologies (a molecular biology reagent company), Madison, WI (1996-1999), and MWG Biotech (contract sequencing, oligo nucleotide, and robotic equipment company) High Point, NC (1999-2000).  In 2000, I joined the Center for Human Genomics at Wake Forest to oversee the high through-put sequencing core lab.  My research interests at Wake Forest include studying the genetic basis for severe asthma risk and pharmacogenomics.  I also collaborate with other researchers on studying the genetics of diabetes, general asthma, prostate cancer, ageing, obesity, and cardiovascular disease.

I live in High Point, NC with my wife Lori and my three daughters Samantha (13), Jessica (11), and Erika (10), and female cat (Cookie) and female dog (Sweet Pea).  I am active in my church praise band where I play the drums in order to satisfy my desire to be a rock star.  I love to travel for pleasure (not work), and I usually spend most of my free time fixing all the stuff that the females in my house break.  My sport obsession is University of North Carolina basketball.
