Pediatric Urology

Our team of pediatric urologists is internationally recognized for their excellence -- we are the largest pediatric urology practice between Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. We treat patients with common conditions such as hernia, hydrocele, urinary tract infection  as well as undescended testicle, hypospadias and hydronephrosis. Our expertise extends to complex issues such as kidney tumor and major reconstructive procedures such as bladder exstrophy repair.

As part of Brenner Children's Hospital, the eighth busiest children's hospital in the nation, we are committed to caring for children in a family-friendly environment that reflects a deep understanding of the needs of children. From the separate waiting room in our Urology Center to special surgical instruments and the expertise of pediatric anesthesiologists – we provide expert care, giving you peace of mind that your child is getting only the best in pediatric urology care.

Many pediatric urologic conditions can be managed medically. But, if surgery is needed, our physicians have expertise in all surgical procedures, including minimally invasive techniques such as endoscopy and laparoscopy. In addition, we’re one of a few hospitals in the country offering robotically-assisted laparoscopic surgery for children. The advantages to these technologies include shorter hospital stays and less blood loss. No matter what the type of surgery, you have peace of mind that all members of the team – including nurses, surgeons and anesthesiologists – are specially trained in pediatric surgery.

Anthony Atala, M.D., pediatric urologist and chairman of the Department of Urology, was the first to report to report success implanting bladders grown in the laboratory from patients’ own cells. We are one of a few hospitals in the country offering clinical studies of these organs for children with spina bifida.
