Welcome to the Wake Forest University Department of Anesthesiology!
We appreciate your interest in our program, and encourage you to look further into what we feel is a wonderfully unique residency experience.  Our department has been built over the years by national and international leaders in all subspecialties of anesthesiology, with the common goal of advancing the field and training the highest quality anesthesiologists possible.

At Wake Forest, residents begin their careers as perioperative physicians via a diverse and integrated intern year including the fields of surgery, medicine, obstetrics, and pediatrics. This experience creates strong clinical skills and lasting professional relationships. Following intern year, trainees receive several months of structured didactics and individualized instruction to introduce residents to the new role of anesthesiologist consultant.

Aside from working in the operating room, our residency program has also been designed to provide many diverse learning opportunities.  Whether creating crisis scenarios in our state-of-the-art simulation lab on a month-long rotation, learning TEE in the Cardiothoracic surgery rooms, performing ultrasound-guided peripheral nerve block catheter placement on a dedicated regional anesthesia rotation, or fine-tuning your pediatric anesthesia skills in our PICU sedation suite, there are multiple opportunities at Wake Forest that go beyond the ordinary.

One of our greatest strengths at Wake Forest is our clinical instruction.  There exists here a culture of teaching and active learning that occurs in both the clinical setting and the lecture hall.  Our faculty is extremely approachable; it is common to find that important combination of personable, supportive faculty who excel at hands-on teaching but are also recognized, well-published experts in their fields.  The department of anesthesia maintains a strong presence throughout the institution and is well respected among other departments.

Another facet to our program’s uniqueness is the multitude of opportunities for research and advanced training.  It is easy to get involved in on-going investigations into fields like pain mechanisms, cardiac diastolic dysfunction, regional anesthesia, epidural analgesia pharmacology, or difficult airway management, among many others.  Many go on to fellowship training, with several each year deciding to stay at Wake Forest for advanced training.  We have an extensive connection with previous residency graduates throughout the country who are frequently looking for new partners.

The camaraderie at Wake Forest is second to none.  We pride ourselves in achieving both academic excellence and facilitating outside interests, with a schedule that allows enough time to take advantage of what North Carolina has to offer.  Winston-Salem is located within a few hours of the mountains and the beach with many of the residents being avidly outdoorsy people including cyclists, anglers, aviators, and rock climbers.

We invite you to look into our program as a place to start your career as an anesthesiologist.  The opportunities that exist here are outstanding, and with leadership that focuses on balancing academic achievement with first-rate clinical instruction, Wake Forest will be one of the country's top departments in which to train for a long time to come.

Our Residents

WFUSM Department of Anesthesiology boasts 55 residents and 15 fellows.  While many of our residents entered medical school directly from undergrad, others took a more round-about approach to their medical careers.  We have a former engineer, a military flight nurse, two artists, a minister, and an entrepreneur who gave up her successful advertising business to follow her dream of medical school.  Four entered medical school after successful careers in research. Three came to Anesthesiology after being boarded in other specialties.  One resident was a CRNA, and then an ENT surgeon, before circling back to his first love of Anesthesiology.

Many of our residents have been (and remain) active in medical mission work.  Last year, 8 residents gave presentations at the Gulf Atlantic Anesthesiology Resident Research Conference in New Orleans. Three residents represented us at the ASA House of Delegates.  Of our graduates last year, four went into private practice, and the rest were accepted into fellowships to further their expertise in their chosen subspecialties.
