Help for Sleepy Children
From BestHealth, October 2005
Is your child getting a good night’s sleep? How much sleep is enough?
“Most children who experience problems with sleep just need to adjust their schedules,” said Karl Karlson, M.D., a pediatric pulmonologist at Brenner Children’s Hospital. “Kids need about eight to nine hours of sleep each night.”
Karlson heads the new Sleep Disorders Clinic at Brenner Children’s Hospital. In addition to excessive daytime sleepiness, the clinic treats children who snore, sleep-walk or have insomnia.
“About eight to ten percent of kids snore, but only about one percent have an obstruction that warrants therapy,” said Karlson.
Pediatric experts from neurology and otolaryngology (ENT) work with Karlson to diagnose and treat children’s sleep problems.
