A Multidisciplinary Approach to Brain Cancer Treatment

Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center offers the region’s only multidisciplinary clinic for brain cancer treatment. Patients receive their brain tumor diagnosis via consultations with nationally-recognized experts, including medical oncologists, neurosurgeons, and radiation oncologists. Those with tumor-associated seizures can also work with a neurologist from Wake Forest Baptist’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Center.

For patients who receive their care at Wake Forest Baptist, the most sophisticated tools in the world are available for brain tumor diagnosis and treatment. We were the first center in the state to offer gamma knife surgery, a non-invasive, ultra-precise therapy for brain tumors. Gamma knife surgery is the gold standard against which other therapies are measured. In addition, we take advantage of a multitude of additional leading-edge approaches for our patients receiving brain cancer treatment, from image-guided surgery to cortical mapping and awake craniotomy.

The Latest Brain Cancer Treatments, Including Brachytherapy

The Wake Forest Baptist Comprehensive Cancer Center offers patients the latest in innovative brain cancer treatments, including GliaSite brachytherapy, awake craniotomy, gamma knife surgery, and Gliadel wafer chemotherapy. Wake Forest was also the first center in the nation to offer the GliaSite radiation therapy system, one of only three new treatments approved for brain tumors in the past two decades.

The medical staff at the Comprehensive Cancer Center includes experts in both high dose rate and low dose rate brachytherapy technology, which can be of particular help to those with locally advanced cancers. We also have a staff of renowned surgeons who are experienced in such procedures as image-guided awake craniotomy, which allows the surgeon to precisely pinpoint areas of the brain that control the various senses so the patient is not left paralyzed, mute, deaf, or blind. Patients are “awake” during the surgery and are therefore able to communicate with the surgeon during the procedure.

Wake Forest Baptist Offers State-of-the-Art Solutions, from Awake Craniotomy to Gamma Knife Surgery

As one of the leading research centers for the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of brain injury resulting from a brain tumor and its treatment, we strive to provide patients with the most current treatment options, including brachytherapy and awake craniotomy, as well as convection-enhanced drug delivery. Patients can also take advantage of outpatient gamma knife surgery, which we have offered since 1999. Our center boasts one of the most experienced radiosurgical teams in the United States and is one of the most active Gamma Knife Centers in the country.  In addition, we offer patients cutting-edge clinical trials for access to the newest treatments as they become available.
