Current Research: 

Work in our laboratory focuses on identifying and characterizing determinants of breast, uterine, and cervical neoplasia.  Much of our research over the past 5 years has involved postmenopausal hormone therapies and their effects on cancer risk biomarkers.  Recent studies include evaluations of “bioidentical” hormone regimens, testosterone therapy, and natural dietary agents such as soy isoflavones.  This work includes histopathologic, immunohistochemical, and quantitative gene-based methods for evaluating risk markers in normal and pre-cancerous reproductive tissues. 

Recently we have also begun work to develop a suitable model for cervical cancer.  For this project we have identified and characterized a range of naturally-occuring oncogenic papillomaviruses associated with cervical neoplasia in female macaques.  Striking similarities in viral-induced carcinogenesis between macaques and women suggest that this model may provide critical information in the study of cervical cancer risk factors and the development of therapeutic anticancer agents.
