Below you will find the answers to many frequently asked questions regarding the proper use of the new Wake Forest University School of Medicine logo, how it is to be applied to business cards, stationery, and more.

Why is there a new Wake Forest University School of Medicine logo?

Wake Forest University has rebranded and as part of that created a new logo.

Do I have to use the new Wake Forest University School of Medicine logo?

Yes. Please see the letter signed by Dr. Applegate, Mr. Edgeton, and Dr. Roy.

Why are you so strict about how the logo is used?

We're here to help people conform to the new standards that are mandated by the rebranding. A style guide has been developed to help us all understand the new brand and implement it correctly. While CREATIVE Communications did not create the style guide or the new logo, we are charged with being the first source for implementing here on the Medical Center Campus.

When do I have to start using the new logo?

We hope to have most departments switched over to the new logo by Sept 1, 2008. Please use the new Wake Forest University School of Medicine logo whenever you have anything new printed.

I still have hundreds of sheets of letterhead with the old logo on it. Can I still use them?

Yes! In fact we encourage you to use up any old stock. However, please do not use old logo stationery or other printed pieces with the old logo after Jan 1, 2009.

How can I order letterhead, envelopes and business cards with the new Wake Forest University School of Medicine logo?

Go to Order WFU Stationery.

Where can I download the new Wake Forest University School of Medicine logo?

Go to Download Logos.

I thought I had seen a centered version of the new Wake Forest University School of Medicine logo but that version is not available for downloading.

There is a centered version but the horizontal version is the primary logo to be used when followed by the name of a Wake Forest University professional school (such as School of Medicine.) There may be an occasional instance that the centered version could be used. Please contact CREATIVE Communications directly.

I'd like to have the new Wake Forest University School of Medicine logo with my departmental descriptor under it.

The Wake Forest University School of Medicine logo should be used by itself except in the case of letterhead as per the style guide. The purpose is to have one Wake Forest University School of Medicine logo rather than creating a departmental logo. The only other use for the logo with a departmental descriptor under it would be for use on the back of a brochure.

Why can’t I add my department’s name immediately underneath the logo?

The standards dictate that the department name appears with the logo only on letterhead and the back of brochures. In all other instances, the logo stands alone with the proper area of isolation.

We have a logo just for the Department of ________ that we’ve always used on PowerPoint slides, posters, and emails. We even have t-shirts with that logo on it. Can I still use that logo along with the new Wake Forest University School of Medicine logo?

No! All departments within Wake Forest University School of Medicine should use the new Wake Forest University School of Medicine logo by itself following the standards set forth in the style guide.

I see patients in the clinic yet I’m faculty in a department in the Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Should I use the Medical Center logo or the School of Medicine logo?

You essentially wear two hats. When you’re seeing patients, you represent Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. However, all research and academic activities are WFU School of Medicine. Any patient related activities should follow the branding for Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center and any research and academic activities should follow the branding for Wake Forest University School of Medicine.

The new Wake Forest University School of Medicine logo does not look good with the color scheme of my PowerPoint slides. Can I change the color of the logo?

You may not change the colors of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine logo. You will need to change the color of your PowerPoint slides instead and follow the color palettes found in the style guide.

I thought our name was Wake Forest University Health Sciences?

Wake Forest University Health Sciences is the legal name for our corporation and should only be used for corporate communications and other legal documents. For all research and academic purposes our standard identifier will be Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Please see the letter signed by Dr. Applegate, Mr. Edgeton, and Dr. Roy.

Who can or should use the Health Sciences logo?

Unless an exception is granted by the President of WFU Health Sciences, all research and academic activities will be identified as Wake Forest University School of Medicine. If you believe your program should be an exception to this standard please contact the President of WFU Health Sciences to explain your position. Please see the letter signed by Dr. Applegate, Mr. Edgeton, and Dr. Roy.

Can I have an all black lettering on my business card?

All stationery (including business cards) must follow the standards as set forth in the style guide.

I need to list all faculty members on our departmental letterhead.

The preferred method is to have generic letterhead for a department without names. However, if a person or small group of people need to be on the letterhead, there is a style allowing that.

I have an existing brochure that just needs to be reprinted as is. Why do I have to pay to have it updated?

As brochures or other pieces are printed they will have to be updated to conform to the new standards.

How can I use the logo on things like ball point pens, key chains, shirts, cups, etc? Often the imprint area is less than the minimum size allowed by the style guide.

The minimum size for the logo is set. If the space is too small do not use the logo but instead typeset the name using the font Avenir Heavy.

Are the new typefaces (Minion and Avenir) available for free?

No, licensing restrictions prevents us from distributing the fonts. Departments who want to use these fonts will have to purchase them from Adobe. However, it is acceptable to substitute Times New Roman for Mimion and Arial for Avenir. These fonts are commonly available on most computers.
