dermatopathology unit

We are currently offering a one-year dermatopathology fellowship to board-certified or board-eligible dermatologists or pathologists. One fellow is accepted each year during which time they will fulfill the requirements for the joint board of dermatopathology offered by the American Board of Pathology and the American Board of Dermatology. Approximately 7,000 dermatopathology-related specimens are accessioned each year, of which the Department of Dermatology at our institution generates approximately one-half. Additionally, around 9,000 specimens are generated from private practice.

The Program

The Wake Forest University School of Medicine Department of Dermatology International Fellows Program, led by Dr. Gil Yosipovitch, offers comprehensive clinical research experience tailored to the needs of the fellow. Working with internationally recognized clinicians, fellows will gain clinical skills that will serve them and their patients in the future.

The Department of Dermatology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine is one of the most academically active dermatology programs in the United States in both cutting edge research and clinical work. It is located in one of the largest tertiary care centers on the eastern seaboard.

The Department is one of the 20 leading dermatology programs in the country. Residents consistently rate the program in the top 10 in the U.S., in part due to the quality of teaching.

The Training Program Includes

The Wake Forest University School of Medicine Department of Dermatology International Fellowship offers six-month, one-year and two-year programs with rolling enrollment to suit the needs of the fellows.

While fellows will not be involved in direct patient care, they will be incorporated into the daily curriculum in both the clinical and research regimens.

clinical and translational research fellowship

The Wake Forest University Department of Dermatology is currently accepting applications for a 1-2 year clinical and translational research fellowship with Dr. Gil Yosipovitch starting in July 2009. Candidates must be graduates of an accredited U.S. medical school.

The fellow will be involved in a wide variety of investigator-initiated clinical and translational research projects involving skin physiology and neurophysiology and treatment of pruritus in atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, keloids, and other dermatologic and systemic diseases. The fellow’s responsibilities include conception and design of clinical and translational research projects, writing research protocols and research grants, carrying out human studies, interpretation of data, and extensive manuscript writing. There are ample opportunities to publish, and fellows are encouraged to present at national and international meetings including the AAD and SID among others.

Dermatology at Wake is extraordinarily collegial, egalitarian, and supportive. The fellow is well-integrated into the department and has regular opportunities to participate in dermatology clinics, grand rounds, and lectures and to teach medical students. There are also valuable opportunities to collaborate with other dermatology faculty and international fellows in the department.

Dermatology at Wake has one of the most productive clinical dermatology research programs in the country. Faculty and fellows routinely publish in leading journals, such as JAAD and JID. Members of the department published more than 20 JAAD articles in 2005 alone and presented nearly 30 posters at the March 2006 AAD meeting.
