Based on nearly 40 years of clinical experience, Gamma Knife SRS is now the preferred treatment for certain types of brain tumors, vascular malformations and trigeminal neuralgia. It does not replace conventional neurosurgery, but is a powerful tool that may supplement standard treatment or be the preferred procedure when traditional open surgery is not appropriate.
The Gamma Knife team includes highly experienced neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists and radiation physicists. Together, they design a unique treatment plan to precisely conform the radiation dose to the size and shape of the patient’s lesion.
The procedure is performed over the course of 4–8 hours. Most patients can return home just a few hours later, with none of open surgery’s after-effects of anesthesia or risks of infection or bleeding.
