Summer Research Opportunities

   arrowSummer Research Opportunities Program in the Biomedical Sciences (SROP):

  • This program is sponsored by the Wake Forest Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
  • 8 week program during the summer months.
  • Rising undergraduate junior and senior science majors who are interested in pursuing a graduate degree.
  • Students will be exposed to basic lab skills, techniques and technology used in biomedical research, data collection, and documentation.
  • Participants will receive a $3,500 stipend for the 2007 summer program, free housing and free transportation to and from the worksite.
  • Poster presentation to showcase summer research.
  • Deadline for summer 2007 - February 9, 2007.

   arrowExcellence in Cardiovascular Sciences (EICS):

  • This program is sponsored by the Hypertension and Vascular Disease Center of Wake Forest University School of Medicine and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Pressure Institute.
  • Provides research opportunities for under-represented minorities.
  • 8 week program during the summer months.
  • Focus is on research training in the cardiovascular sciences with mentoring by medical school faculty.
  • Hands-on laboratory research and a lecture series which includes presentations by faculty and guest speakers.
  • Poster presentation to showcase summer research.
  • Students will receive a stipend of $3,462 for the 2007 eight week program, free housing on the Reynolda campus, and will be reimbursed for transportation costs to and from Winston-Salem. 
  • Deadline for summer 2007 - February 9, 2007.

   arrow WFIRM Summer Scholars Program:

  • This program is sponsored by the Institute for Regenerative Medicine, Wake Forest University Health Sciences.
  • Areas of focus for WFIRM projects include biomaterials, cell and molecular biology, physiology, biomedical engineering, controlled delivery, biochemistry, cell and gene therapy, and tissue engineering.
  • The main objectives of the program are to expose students to a multidisciplinary research environment that is driven by clinical needs, provide training in a strong team environment, and facilitate the education of the next generation of scientists and clinicians.
  • The program provides a competitive stipend to undergraduate science and engineering students.
  • Program participants are asked to work 10-12 weeks during the summer months (start and ending times are flexible).
  • Application deadline is March 1, 2007.

Other Research Opportunities

   arrowU.S.A. - Brazil Consortium:

  • The purpose of the program is to train U.S. and Brazilian students in integrative/translational biology and to strengthen interchange of cultural and scientific values to widen the horizons of participants.
  • Emphasis is on increasing diversity in the sciences by including schools with large minority populations as partners to encourage students from under-represented groups to participate in foreign exchange activities.
  • Program participants will receive financial support for housing and travel.
  • They will pay tuition at their home institution and will receive credit for the courses taken in Brazil.
  • Application deadline has been extended to April 15, 2007 (flyer).
