Defibrillator
Defibrillator

The Heart Center of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center has a large multidisciplinary team to manage patients with intractable or medically unresponsive atrial or ventricular arrhythmias, abnormalities in the "electrical" conducting systems that regulate cardiac rate and rhythm. With up-to-date procedures and equipment, such as the implantable defibrillator, we specialize in the management of cardiac arrhythmias and arrhythmia-related problems, including tachycardias, bradycardias, syncope, cardiac arrest, and disorders associated with high risk of sudden death.

Implantable Defibrillator
An implantable defibrillator is a device used to continuously monitor the electrical activity of the heart and automatically detect and terminate ventricular tachycardia and ventricular fibrillation.

Dual-chamber Defibrillator
The Heart Center is one of 15 centers in the country testing a new dual-chamber defibrillator for patients with both atrial and ventricular arrhythmia. The conventional treatment, a ventricular defibrillator used with medication, is only effective in half of patients. The dual-chamber defibrillator translates information from the atrium to discriminate the type of rhythm problem being treated.
