My research interests currently reside in the epidemiology of antimicrobial resistance, the pharmacoepidemiology of antimicrobial use and the relationship between the two. There is much need for information about antimicrobial resistance in the hospital and outpatient community and the potential to improve susceptibility through the proper and prudent use of antibiotics. Outcomes data looking at the impact of antimicrobial management programs, both at the level of the individual patient and hospital community are also required. We are in the initial stages of establishing a research program to yield such data. Current active projects include the investigation of potential human colonization and infection due to drug resistant bacteria of animal origin in Eastern North Carolina, the establishment of a network of university and community hospitals to share information and ideas on antimicrobial resistance and drug usage, regional drug surveillance for antimicrobial resistance and physician and patient education programs to promote prudent antimicrobial use.
