Dr. Luther’s primary research focus relates to medical education, with a particular emphasis on the inherent aspects of preclinical and clinical medical education that allow for cognitive errors in clinical decision making and how modification of or interventions in the educational process might reduce these errors.
Clinical, Research and Educational Activities:
My clinical activities include attending on the Infectious Diseases consult service, seeing patients in the Infectious Diseases Specialty Clinic (IDSC), and attending on the General Internal Medicine ward service. My clinical interests include general infectious diseases as well as the care of patients with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection.
The primary focus of my scholarship relates to medical education. I am interested in the inherent aspects of preclinical and clinical medical education that allow for cognitive errors in clinical decision making and how modification of or interventions in the educational process might reduce these errors. In addition, I am interested in fellowship education and intrinsic differences in this type of training when compared to training at other levels of medical education, such as medical school and residency. In particular, I am investigating the characteristics of mentoring that occur during infectious diseases fellowship training and how fellowship programs can be improved to facilitate the mentoring relationship.
