Meet the Doctor

Dr. Keith Walter , Associate Professor of Surgical Sciences – Ophthalmology

Keith A. Walter, MD is a board certified ophthalmologist specializing in cornea and refractive surgery. He joined the faculty at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in 1996.  He received his medical training at Duke University, and completed his Ophthalmology residency and fellowship at Emory University . During his fellowship, Dr Walter was a Co-investigator of the first and largest LASIK investigation in the United States.  He has been performing LASIK since 1995.  He has authored several articles related to LASIK surgery and his ground breaking research has been featured in the New York Times, Time Magazine, Boston Globe, Men’s Health Magazine, Shape Magazine, MSNBC.com, LA times, Science Daily and CNN.  Dr Walter was the first to adjust his surgical technique for humidity to improve LASIK outcomes, based on this research.



Dr. Walter has performed refractive surgery on numerous physicians and surgeons in the area including cardiologists, heart surgeons, neurosurgeons, pediatricians, anesthesiologists, internists, and even an ophthalmologist; also on local news anchors and NASCAR drivers. Dr. Walter himself had LASIK surgery in 1999 and is still seeing 20/15 today.

Dr. Walter plans on staying in Winston-Salem for the long term and has become an integral part of the community. He is an avid road cyclist and enjoys epic rides in the North Carolina Mountains.
