Resident Life

Director's Welcome

  Hal W. Elliott, MD

Thank you for your interest in the General Psychiatry Residency Program, the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine of Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Accredited in 1950 as Bowman Gray Department of Psychiatry, the Wake Forest Residency Training Program has a long history of balanced training in Biologic Psychiatry and Psychotherapy. Our graduates are represented in areas of practice that include Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, Psychosomatic Medicine and Geriatric Psychiatry. Many of our residents have elected to take their Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowships in our Department's program.

Our mission is to educate residents in an intellectually rigorous, collegial, supportive and family friendly environment. While we have implemented multiple changes to our program over the past several years, we continually seek to improve the educational process. We encourage continuing input from faculty and resident colleagues. Six residents per class allow individual attention and mentoring.

Diversity in all areas has been strength of the Program. We look for applicants who are academically successful with a strong work ethic and who enjoy the collegiality our Program fosters. We welcome applications from both allopathic and osteopathic graduates.

Please refer to our attached handbook and our website generally for more information. In addition, you may contact Sheila Leach, Residency Coordinator Assistant at saleach@wfubmc.edu or 336-716-3650. We appreciate your inquiry and look forward to your applications.

Hal W. Elliott, MD
Assistant Professor,
Director of Psychiatry Residency Training Program
