Journal Club is held on Mondays at 12 noon (with the exception of the last Monday of each month).  The purpose of journal club is teach fellows to develop the ability to critically analyze data reported in the literature and to allow the entire Nephrology section to remain abreast of cutting-edge issues in nephrology.  In general, papers are presented and discussed from high-quality clinical journals in the fields of nephrology, hypertension, transplantation, and general medicine (such as Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, American Journal of Kidney Diseases, Kidney International, Hypertension, Transplantation, New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, Lancet), and basic science journals (such as Nature, Journal of Clinical Investigation, and American Journal of Physiology).  All fellows and faculty are expected to attend this conference.  On a rotating basis, two journal articles are presented at each conference by either a fellow (along with a precepting faculty member) or a faculty member.

Basic Science Conference is held on the last Monday of each month at 12 noon.  This conference series is led by Drs. DuBose and Buckalew, and is specifically geared for the fellows, to teach basic science issues related to renal physiology and pathophysiology, electrolyte, and acid-base metabolism.

Transplant Conference is held Tuesdays at 4 p.m.  This seminar is attended by all fellows and nephrology faculty rotating through the Transplant Service, along with the Transplant Surgery faculty, housestaff, pharmacy, nursing, and social work teams.  Current cutting-edge issues in transplant surgery and medicine are presented by either the nephrology or surgery faculty or housestaff.

Internal Medicine Grand Rounds is held on Thursdays at 8:00 a.m.  Faculty from Wake Forest as well as other institutions are invited to discuss clinical topics in internal medicine.  Several times a year Nephrology faculty are asked to present at Grand Rounds.  Moreover, nationally recognized Nephrology faculty are often invited to speak as visiting professors.

Nephrology Seminar is held on Fridays at 12 noon.  This conference is coordinated jointly by the Nephrology fellows and faculty, and has 3 separate formats, each used on a rotating basis.  1.) Case Conference:  Interesting cases encountered in the hospital and clinic are presented and the evaluation and treatment plans are researched and discussed.  Morbidity and Mortality issues involving patients with unexpected poor outcomes may be discussed during this conference.  2.)  Renal Biopsy Conference:  This conference is attended by all nephrology fellows, as well as both adult and pediatric nephrology faculty, and pathology staff.  Interesting patients who have undergone renal biopsy are discussed by the nephrology fellow or faculty member who performed the biopsy.  The biopsy findings are then reviewed in detail by Dr. Samy Iskandar from the Department of Pathology, after which the presenting clinician gives follow-up information on the patient.  3.)  Nephrology Seminar:  A faculty member or fellow will discuss an in-depth review of a cutting-edge issue in the fields of nephrology or hypertension.  The presenting faculty member will be either a member of the Section on Nephrology or a visiting speaker from another department or institution.

Research Conference is held on the 3rd Friday of each month at 12 noon.  This conference, attended by all faculty and fellows, involves the presentation of ongoing clinical or basic science research performed by faculty or fellows.  Occasionally faculty from other departments are invited to present their nephrology or hypertension-related research.

On the 1st and 3rd Fridays of each month at 8:30 a.m., Dr. Iskandar from the Pathology Department holds a renal biopsy review for the fellows.  This case-based tutorial involves unknown biopsy specimens which the fellows are asked to examine in advance, after which Dr. Iskandar teaches the fundamentals of renal biopsy interpretation.

Nephrology Fellows’ Core Conference

The Fellows’ Core Conference is held on Wednesdays at 12 noon.  In general, a faculty member will give in-depth lectures on a specific area of nephrology each week for a month, aimed at the fellow level.  These lectures are rotated so that the entire breadth of nephrology is covered over the course of the two-year fellowship.  The conference schedule for the 2007-08 academic year is as follows:

Additionally, the fellows have a twice-weekly Core Conference held during the summer months, as an Introduction to Nephrology series (usually held on Mondays and Fridays at 12 noon).  While this series is geared especially for the first-year fellows, the lecture material is updated from year to year, in order to keep this series relevant for the second-year fellows as well
