Clinical Neurophysiology


EEG/Epilepsy Pathway

This one-year ACGME-approved fellowship provides a broad exposure to a variety of neurophysiologic techniques including electroencephalography (EEG), evoked potentials (EP), polysomnography, and electromyography (didactic).  The EEG/epilepsy pathway offers in-depth exposure to neonatal, pediatric, and adult EEG, routine and intraoperative EP, intensive video-EEG monitoring including intracranial depth and grid recording, electrocorticography, and ambulatory EEG.  The medical and surgical management of epilepsy is emphasized.  Advanced neuroimaging including PET, SPECT and functional MRI are available for seizure focus localization and functional mapping.  Limited exposure to sleep medicine is available.  The training will lead to eligibility for the American Board of Clinical Neurophysiology and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with certification in Clinical Neurophysiology.  


EMG Neuromuscular Pathway

This emphasis of the Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship (Neuromuscular pathway) focuses on the diagnosis and management of neuromuscular disorders with extensive exposure to electrodiagnosis, nerve and muscle ultrasound, and therapeutic chemodenervation.  The fellowship is approved by the ACGME and fulfills the requirements for taking the certifying examination in clinical neurophysiology from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology as well as the American Board of Electrodiagnostic Medicine. 

Fellows will participate in the general neuromuscular clinic as well as the ALS Center and Muscular Dystrophy Association clinics.  They will receive detailed training in routine nerve conduction studies, special conduction studies (blink reflex, F-wave and H-reflex testing), repetitive nerve stimulation, EMG, nerve and muscle ultrasound, autonomic testing, and botulinum injection.  Each fellow will be encouraged to participate in clinical research studies relating to electrodiagnosis, neuromuscular ultrasound or neuromuscular disorders.  They will receive limited training in movement disorders, EEG, intraoperative monitoring, evoked potentials, and sleep disorders.
