Mammography: What you need to know

Right now, there are more than two million women living in the U.S. who have been treated for breast cancer. Mammograms can save lives by detecting breast cancer early. In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, join staff from Wake Forest Baptist Outpatient Imaging Center to learn more about the importance of annual mammogram screenings.

Women undergoing cancer treatment learn ways to enhance their appearance and feel better about themselves. Come participate and receive a free make-up kit valued at more than $150.  Sponsored by the American Cancer Society.

Take it to Heart
5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Learn ways to be heart healthier during this two-hour program that features a cardiac nurse, nutritionist, exercise physiologist and pharmacist. Sponsored by the Wake Forest Baptist Heart Center.

Vegetarian Fare
6 p.m.
Are you considering becoming vegetarian or are currently and want to learn more? Amy Fanjoy, registered dietitian, would like to help you understand the basics of vegetarianism and how to make sure you receive all the proper nutrients needed for good health.

Advance Directives

Learn how advance directives, such as a living will and health care power of attorney, can ensure that your wishes will be met. Carol Ford of the Hospice & Palliative Care Center explains the terminology and procedures. Documents notarized free of charge.

Gamma Knife: Incision-free surgery
11 am
Gamma Knife, an alternative to open incision surgery, is the treatment of choice for certain benign and malignant brain tumors and vascular malformations involving the brain. Wake Forest Baptist radiation oncologist Dr. Michael Chan describes this non-invasive, state-of-the-art procedure, including risks and benefits.

Wake Forest Baptist ophthalmologist Dr. Keith Walter discusses LASIK and advanced cataract surgery, the specific vision problems corrected by these procedures, the characteristics of qualified patients, and the risks and benefits.

Inspiration from Cancer Survivors
11 a.m. to 1p.m.
View the quirky, dark comedy, Jonna’s Body, Please Hold, chronicling a cancer patient’s journey through cancer, and listen as a panel of cancer survivors shares their personal experiences. Box lunches provided. Video at 11 a.m. followed by the survivor panel.
