Susan G. (Hiss) Butler, PhD, MS, CCC-SLP
Associate Professor
Director of Research

Interests
Dr. Butler works in the Center for Voice and Swallowing Disorders in the Department of Otolaryngology. She specializes in adult swallowing disorders that have occurred as the result of head and neck cancer, neurological diseases and insults, gastroesophageal reflux disease, pulmonary disease, and cervical spine surgery.
Dr. Butler offers evaluation of dysphagia that includes flexible endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES), pharyngeal/UES manometry, modified barium swallow studies (MBS), and swallowing-respiration coordination assessment. Dr. Butler also provides innovative and comprehensive dysphagia rehabilitation utilizing surface electromyographic biofeedback, lingual manometry biofeedback, endoscopic biofeedback, swallowing-respiration coordination biofeedback, physiologic exercises, and research protocoled e-stim.
Dr. Butler has held over 50 seminars nation-wide training individuals in Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing and has provided hundreds of presentations on advanced dysphagia evaluation and management across the country.
Dr. Butler is an active researcher and publisher in swallowing and swallowing disorders, and has won the prestigious scientific presentation award of the Dysphagia Research Society for two years. Dr. Butler has also chaired the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association Videofluoroscopy Swallowing Study Guidelines and Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders Continuing Education Committees.
