Weekly Conferences

Department of Otolaryngology Conference Schedule
Academic Year 2008-2009

Educational Conferences:

Each Monday afternoon at 4:30 PM, Radiology conference is held in the Radiology department.  Interesting cases of the past week, as well as review of operative cases for the coming week are presented.  This conference is under the direction of Dr. Dan Williams of the Radiology department in conjunction with the PGY-2 otolaryngology residents (who are responsible for collecting the cases to be reviewed).  Following the Radiology conference, faculty directed conferences are held according to the following schedule below. These conferences are either in
a didactic, case review or oral board review format.

Monday Conferences are as follows at 5:30 PM:

1st Monday:  Pediatric Otolaryngology: Drs. Kirse & Evans
2nd Monday: Rhinology Conference: Dr. Matthews
3rd Monday:  Allergy Conference:  Dr. Mims
4th Monday:  Skull Base/Head & Neck Reconstruction Conference:
                   Drs. Browne & Sullivan

The heaviest conference day is Wednesday:

The day begins at 6:45 AM with discussion of assigned chapters from Bailey’s textbook.  The corresponding COCLIA learning module published by the AAO-HNS is discussed as well.  Each resident is assigned one question from that week’s COCLIA topic and prepares a handout to give to other residents.  The COCLIA questions are compiled into a notebook by each resident to create a study guide to assist with the yearly In-service exam preparation.  This conference has a two year rotating curriculum thus each resident will be exposed to the COCLIA/Bailey’s topics twice during his/her otolaryngology training.  Near the time of the yearly Otolaryngology Training Exam, the residents will use this time for group review and study.

Grand Rounds then occur from 7:30am-8:20am and are Category I CME conferences, attended by most faculty and all residents. Every other month the 1st Wednesday Grand Rounds are devoted to review of interesting, difficult, and/or educational audiology cases and are attended by the audiology staff as well.  Guest speakers throughout the year may present in this time slot.  The third Wednesday of every month is a shorter Grand Rounds, allowing for Morbidity & Mortality Conference.

From 8:20am-9:15am the residents have on a rotating basis either a didactic Speech and Hearing conference, Morbidity & Mortality Conference, Research conference, or Pathology conference wherein AFIP cases are reviewed. (Faculty with operating room block time beginning at 8:30 AM, start their cases without resident support to allow all to attend this 8:30-9:15 AM conference period.)

The last Wednesday each month from 6:45 AM - 9:00 AM is devoted to Temporal Bone Lab and discussion and presentation of a dissection by Dr. John May. The dissection can be visualized on the 3-D video feed from a dissection microscope. Dr. May has a syllabus and plan for dissection goals according to year.   The conference/lab begins either with a didactic lecture followed by temporal bone dissection, and/or a live 3-D dissection, then followed by each resident dissecting with his supervision.

The remaining 2nd, 3rd & 4th Wednesdays of every month at noon is Head and Neck Tumor Board, a multi-disciplinary working conference that is attended by representative faculty members from Otolaryngology, Radiation Therapy, Hematology/Oncology, Dentistry, Pathology, and Neuroradiology.

Lastly, every Wednesday @ 5:30 PM is a faculty directed conference, again either in a didactic, case review or oral board review format. The Schedule for the Wednesday evening conference is as follows:

1st Wednesday:  Otology Conference: Dr. May
2nd Wednesday: Facial Plastics Conference: Dr. Goldman
3rd Wednesday:  Laryngology Conference: Drs. Butler, Rees & Wright
4th Wednesday:  Head and Neck Conference: Dr. Waltonen

Thursday Conference as follows:

1st Thursday (or 1st non-trauma Thursday) 5:30 PM - Journal Club:  Rotated and directed by each faculty member.  On occasion, will take place at a restaurant.
