Current Project: Immune and nonimmune mechanisms of glomerular injury
Glomeruli are clusters of small blood vessels in the kidney responsible, in consort with an elaborate system of tubules, for filtering out noxious metabolites from the bloodstream. Many conditions can lead to scarring of glomeruli and permanent loss of kidney function. The afflicted individual then needs either lifelong hemodialysis or renal transplantation to survive. Some of these conditions are related to abnormal reactions of the immune system whereas others are mediated by nonimmunologic mechanisms. I am interested in the investigation of mechanisms of glomerular injury in general, although my activities in the last few years have focused on diagnostic aspects of kidney disease.
