Rotation Details/Objectives:
Upon completion of this laboratory experience, the pathology resident will be able to demonstrate competence in the following areas of knowledge and practice:
- The ability to recognize the chemistry result patterns typical of common disease states;
- The ability to interpret electrophoretic and immunoelectrophoretic patterns and immunoglobulin quantitations;
- The ability to evaluate the clinical utility of a new assay;
- An understanding of the role of commercial, referral, and special-function laboratories;
- Basic knowledge of principles and implications of on-line data acquisition;
A working knowledge of statistics as applied to clinical chemistry;
- The ability to apply internal and external QC/QA methods to recognize analytical problems;
- The ability to introduce a new procedure from the literature to the working clinical chemistry laboratory;
- An understanding of the principles of specialized procedures such as HPLC, GC, capillary electropheresis, immunoassays, and drug analysis; and
- As residents progress, they will be expected to handle problems raised by the medical staff.
