Coagulation Laboratory
- Understand all the laboratory tests offered, the methodology available, and the clinical significance of normal and abnormal results.
- Be able to knowledgeably discuss clinical problems involving patients with coagulopathies/bleeding disorders and serve as a liaison source for clinicians.
Bone Marrow Laboratory
Develop the ability to interpret bone marrow specimens independently by signing out with the staff pathologist on the bone marrow signout rotation.
Flow Cytometry
Understand the principles involved in flow cytometry and interpret the results obtained on specimens reveived for lymphocyte population subtyping, and leukemia/lymphoma phenotyping.
Urinalysis Laboratory
Understand the principles of urinalysis, interpret the findings, and know the clinical significance of normal and abnormal results obtained on urine specimens.
Miscellaneous
- Hemoglobin electorphoresis: Develop the ability to interpret the results of hemoglobin electrophoresis testing, and serve as a liaison source for the clinicians as needed on complex cases.
- Synovial and other body fluids: Become proficient in the laboratory diagnosis of various joint diseases through the microscopic examination of synovial fluids. Cerebrospinal and miscellaneous fluids require knowing the methods used to analyze these fluids physically, chemically, and cytologically; and how to interpret the results.
As residents gain experience and competence in these areas of training, they will be given gradually increasing responsibilites in matters pertaining to the signout of individual cases (in a manner similar to frozen section signout in surgical pathology) under the supervision of the faculty. | |
