MT 324-C Special Studies (4 semester hours)

Course Description:        

Special Studies includes the study of principles and procedures in hospital relations, blood collection, clinical laboratory safety, computer applications, quality management, clinical laboratory management, educational methodologies and research design.  Students perform standard techniques used in obtaining suitable blood specimens for testing, acquire knowledge of a hospital's organization operations, and acquire experience in interacting with patients, visitors, physicians, supervisors, and other hospital personnel.  Students also participate in end-of-year review sessions and take a comprehensive examination.

 

Special Studies General Objectives:       

Upon the conclusion of the Special Studies course, the student will         

  • Identify pre-analytical, analytical and post-analytical components of laboratory service.
  • Discuss laboratory safety and governmental regulations and standards including OSHA mandates, right to know communication, blood-borne pathogens plan, chemical hygiene plan, waste disposal, fire safety and the importance of safety record keeping.
  • Discuss the importance of interpersonal and interdisciplinary communication and team-building skills.
  • Choose the most appropriate ethical approach in given laboratory situations.
  • Demonstrate professionalism in your career as a clinical laboratory scientist/medical technologist.
  • Discuss education techniques used in the delivery of instructional units of study for the medical technologist/clinical laboratory scientist.
  • Create and evaluate written learning objectives using established criteria in the cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains.
  • Select and construct education measurement instruments for the cognitive, psychomotor and affective domains.
  • Evaluate published research study as an informed consumer.
  • Discuss human resource management including position description, performance evaluation, utilization of personnel, and analysis of workflow and staffing patterns.
  • Discuss financial management including profit and loss, cost/benefit, reimbursement requirements and materials inventory management.
  • Draw blood from patients using correct laboratory protocol and applying correct safety measures.
  • Present continuing education seminar using knowledge of education and evaluation techniques.

 

Achievement of the objectives will be demonstrated by obtaining an average final grade of 75% or better.  The grading scale is as follows:

 

          A = 94 - 100%

          B = 86 - 93%

          C = 75 - 85%

 

The final grade will be based on the following:

 

Blood Collection:                 25%

Management / Education      60%

Time and Attendance          5%

Comprehensive Exam          10%
