Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)-based technology allows detection of DNA or RNA that may be specific for certain microorganisms, genes, or gene products. Currently the PCR lab offers the following:
- BCR-abl
- Cytomegalovirus
- Enterovirus
- Epstein Barr virus
- Herpes simplex virus
- Herpes varicella/zoster virus
- Herpes VIII (KSHV)
- Human papilloma virus
- Immunoglobulin heavy chain
- Toxoplasma
All specimens submitted for analysis must be accompanied by a requistion form containing the following information:
- Patient name,
- ordering physician and address,
- date of collection,
- test required, and
- specimen source.
Samples for PCR may be submitted in several ways:
- Paraffin embedded tissue on glass slides
- Paraffin block
- Air-dried or Tzanck smear on glass slide
- Fresh or frozen tissue. The use of formalin is discouraged
- Fresh body fluid. (blood, vitreous, CSF) Blood should be collected in EDTA, NOT HEPARIN. There must be a separate tube collected for PCR tests. Tubes that have been opened and sampled for other tests will be rejected.
Normal turnaround time is estimated to be 3-5 days depending upon the day the sample is received.
