Congratulations on your decision to begin your residency/fellowship here at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. In order for you to begin your residency/fellowship at the Medical Center on July 1, 2009, you must hold current American Heart Association (AHA) course completion cards as follows:
Family Medicine and Anesthesiology: BLS, ACLS, NRP and PALS
Emergency Medicine and Surgical Specialties: BLS, ACLS. (PALS and NRP are strongly recommended
Pediatrics: BLS, NRP and PALS
OB/GYN: BLS, ACLS and NRP
All other residencies/fellowships: BLS and ACLS
It is highly recommended that you fulfill these requirements prior to your arrival at the Medical Center. If you are able to complete these courses elsewhere, please submit copies of the BLS, ACLS and/or PALS cards that you have obtained to the address below by June 12, 2009.
For individuals who are unable to complete these requirements prior to arriving at the Medical Center, ACLS, BLS, NRP and PALS courses will be conducted in the Department of Life Support Education. These classes will be held on June 17-18 or June 24-25, 2009 (ACLS & BLS), or June 22-23, 2009 (NRP & PALS). Each class is limited to 32 participants. Please return the attached Registration Form as soon as possible (even if you only need BLS) to assure your slot in one of these classes. Registration deadline is May 30, 2009. The registration form can be mailed, faxed or emailed (see contact information below). Sorry, no phone registrations will be accepted.
For the PALS and NRP classes, first preference will be given to incoming residents that are required to be trained in those courses. The next preference will be to Emergency Medicine and the Surgical Specialties. The remaining slots (if any) will be filled on a “first come, first served” basis.
Required textbooks for the courses are as follows: BLS course- “BLS for Healthcare Providers Student Manual”; for ACLS course- “Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Student Manual” and for the PALS course- “Pediatric Advanced Life Support Provider Manual”. All of these textbooks can be purchased in the Medical Center Bookstore or ordered from any of the following vendors:
For the NRP course, the textbook is Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation.5th edition. This textbook can be purchased in the Medical Center bookstore or ordered from the Americn Academy of Pediatrics website: http://www.aap.org/nrp/nrpmain.html.
We cannot guarantee you a slot in any of these courses. Positions will be filled in order of receipt of a completed registration form. If you have any questions regarding these classes or requirements, please contact our staff for information. We look forward to working with you at the Medical Center this year.
