Cultural & Educational Centers

Cultural Center
The city’s arts program, anchored by the North Carolina School of the Arts, the nation’s only state-supported school for the performing arts, and the Arts Council, the oldest civic arts organization in the country, offers a variety of cultural events for the entire community.

Concerts of classical and modern music, dance and drama are presented by the Winston-Salem/Piedmont Triad Symphony and the Little Theater and by students at the North Carolina School of the Arts and by its professional affiliates: The Piedmont Chamber Orchestra, the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival and the Piedmont Opera Company.

The Sawtooth Center for Visual Art offers classes for all ages and skill levels. Piedmont Craftsmen Inc. exhibits crafts by the Southeast’s finest craftsmen.

The Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art (SECCA) presents frequently changing exhibitions of contemporary art. Reynolda House (former home of tobacco magnate R.J. Reynolds) houses a collection of American art from the 1700s to the present.

The Urban Arts program of the Arts Council sponsors outdoor concerts in neighborhood parks and other art events.

Educational Center
Winston-Salem is proud of the educational opportunities available in the Twin City.

Winston-Salem is the home of Wake Forest University and Salem College, a women’s college founded in the 1700s by the Moravians. Winston-Salem State University and the North Carolina School of the Arts are both part of the University of North Carolina system.

The Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Public School System provides education from kindergarten through the 12th grade in 63 schools throughout the county. In addition, there private schools, business and trade schools and a technical school, Forsyth Technical Community College. An arts-based curriculum school for primary grades is in the planning stages.

The variety of educational institutions not only meets the individual needs of children but also provides continuing education and employment opportunities for adult members of the family.
