Program Description
Selecting a psychiatry residency program is an exciting and complex task. Our entire faculty and staff strive to provide the best environment for the creative development of highly skilled psychiatrists who will be well prepared for their professional career. Our four-year accredited program accepts six residents per year. In addition, fellowship opportunities are available in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Rotations
Residents rotate through carefully designed clinical experiences to achieve the core competencies of clinical psychiatry. We offer a flexible general medicine program, longitudinal patient care opportunities in state-of-the-art facilities. Residents experience all forms of mental health service delivery, including managed care programs, state hospitals, community mental health centers, a child guidance clinic and a Veterans Administration medical center. Both research and forensic experiences are available during elective and selective rotations and residents are encouraged to work with faculty members or develop their own projects as their interests and time permits. We are charter members of an alliance with the psychiatry departments of East Carolina University and UNC-Chapel Hill for managed care and educational collaborative efforts, the first such academic linkage in the nation.
Didactics
The didactic program includes a combination of lectures, seminars, case conferences, individual and group supervision, grand rounds presentations, a journal club and a resident-organized teaching conference. Residents gain valuable experience as teachers working with medical students, residents from other departments and other mental health professionals who train or work at the rotation sites.
Service
Our dedicated faculty provides the individual attention to our residents at all levels and serve as faculty advisors, supervisors, and mentors through all stages of training. Residents receive a minimum of two hours of individual psychotherapy supervision weekly, as well as rotation-specific supervision from their Service Chiefs. Our Faculty Teaching Clinic, begun in July 2007, is Resident staffed and operates under direct faculty supervision. Unique opportunities in modern neuropsychiatric assessment (including dynamic neuroimaging technologies) and in geriatric psychiatry (medical and psychiatric assessments for the homebound elderly) are available to all residents.
