Mary Fontana-Penn, MD
I recently moved to Winston-Salem form Philadelphia, PA, with my husband and our two daughters ages 8 and 5 years old. Both my husband and I joined the faculty at Wake Forest in the Department of Internal Medicine. I also have a joint appointment in the Department of Pediatrics.
I received my medical degree in 1987 from Ross University School of Medicine, Portsmouth, Dominica. I then completed an Internal Medicine/Pediatric Residency at Albert Einstein Medical Center, Philadelphia, PA in 1991 and an Allergy and Clinical Immunology Fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Philadelphia , PA in 1995. I received Board Certification in both Internal Medicine and Pediatrics in 1991 and Allergy and Clinical Immunology in 1995.
After I completed my training, I entered an academic practice at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia. Later I returned to Thomas Jefferson to participate in the Fellowship Training Program where I could teach but also care for both adult and pediatric patients. I remained Clinical Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at Thomas Jefferson University until moving to Wake Forest. Eventually, I went into private practice in 1998 and served as the former Allergy/Immunology Section Chief at Pennsylvania Hospital from 1999-2000. I remained in private practice in the Greater Philadelphia Area until June, 2003.
With my adult and pediatric training, I care for patients of all ages. My special areas of interests include food allergy, allergic rhinitis, chronic sinusitis and asthma. I am also caring for patients with congenital immunodeficiencies in a weekly specially clinic.
