Clinical Internships
Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center Currently Offers Internships in the Following Areas:
The intern will work under the direction of a North Carolina licensed recreational therapist and a nationally certified CTRS. Interns are required to do Case Study presentations, related readings, special projects, and other duties outlined by their clinical intern supervisor. The intern also is required to do administrative readings and meet with the Assistant Director of Recreation Therapy, covering administrative topics. As schedule permits, intern may have the opportunity to become oriented with other areas where Recreation Therapy services are delivered. The clinical internship offered to students is comprehensive and will provide a student with a thorough hands on experience in the field of Recreation Therapy. An intern will work a minimum of 40 hours a week and may be asked to work a flex schedule which may include evenings and weekends.
All interested applicants should submit a letter of intent and a resume to the Assistant Director of Recreation Therapy by the time table below. All applicants will be contacted immediately following the date with those potential interns being contacted for an on site interview.

General Goals of Recreation Therapy Internship Program for the Student are to:
- Gain knowledge of the multifaceted role of a Recreation Therapist in a clinical setting.
- Put academic training into practice under the supervision of a Recreation Therapist.
- Enable the student to develop skills (communicative, leadership, assessment, programming, and evaluation) needed in working with patients, families and staff.
- Become familiar with the administrative duties of a Recreation Therapy Assistant Director.
- Become familiar with the hospital's overall philosophies and functions.
- Gain insight into their suitability and desire to become employed in the field of Recreation Therapy.
Recreation Therapy Internship Program
General Guidelines/Responsibilities
Internships are available year round for undergraduate and graduate students. All students making inquiries are instructed to send a cover letter and a resume to the Assistant Director of Recreation Therapy. All potential applicants are interviewed by the Assistant Director and appropriate staff members. The number of interns accepted varies according to quality of applicants and staff responsibilities.
Guidelines:
- The time spent on unit(s) is governed by staff responsibilities and the intern's goals and desires.
- The amount of work assigned to the intern is delegated according to the intern's ability to accept responsibility.
- Starting date of internship is arranged with the Assistant Director. Intern will work for 40 hours a week with possible evening and weekend work for a minimum of 12 weeks.
- Intern must sign a written agreement before beginning work.
- Orientation (generally one week) consists of a tour of the hospital and unit (s), introduction to staff, observation of staff (low level participation in activities) and required readings.
- Intern will have available time at the end of each working day for a question/answer session with the clinical intern supervisor.
- Intern will meet with the Assistant Director twice a month to discuss experiences, progress, and problems.
- Intern will attend all staff meetings and other meetings/conferences when appropriate.
- Assistant Director and clinical intern supervisor will complete and review with the intern a mid-term and final evaluation.
Responsibilities of the Intern:
- By the end of the first week, must provide Assistant Director with a written statement of internship expectations.
- Obtain a name tag identifying him/her as a Recreation Therapy Intern.
- Function duties as outlined by specific unit requirements.
- Be prepared to orally present reports at staff meetings on required readings.
- Do required administrative readings and spend minimum of 3 hours with Assistant Director of Recreation Therapy covering administrative topics.
- Present at one Recreation Therapy staff meeting an article of interest.
- Keep a daily log of experience.
- Fill out daily log sheets and submit to Assistant Director monthly.
- Fill out evaluation form about internship for department.
- Be certified in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center Recreation Therapy Internship Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) Unit
12 weeks (15 weeks)- 40 hours per week 11 week (14 weeks)- clinical practice 1 week - orientation

Clinical Internship Requirements

- General knowledge of diagnoses specific to the rehabilitation setting i.e. SCI, CVA, ABI

STUDENT/INTERN GUIDELINES
(APPLICATIONS MAY BE OBTAINED EITHER BY CALLING THE RECREATION THERAPY OFFICE OR FROM THE WEBSITE)
All students are required to complete and submit an application prior to scheduling an interview. Allow 1 to 2 weeks for processing applications.
PRACTICUM REQUIREMENTS:
Option #1: 2 - 50 hours: Schedule interview one week in advance. Application must be received prior to scheduling interview.
Option #2: 50 hours or more: Schedule interview one week in advance. Cover letter and resume to accompany application which must be received prior to scheduling interview.
Complete volunteer orientation. This will be scheduled prior to starting date.
INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS:
- Minimum - 12 - 480 hours
- Cover letter, resume, and application should be received prior to scheduling interview. Material has to be received prior to deadline. (Call to receive deadline dates.)
REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL STUDENTS:
- Arrive on time.
- Only those scheduled for the experience are allowed. (Do not bring a friend to observe.)
- Sign confidentiality form. Notify our department ahead of time of any forms that you need to have signed.
- Notify Baptist Hospital if interviews, practicums, or observations need to be rescheduled or if deciding not to fulfill commitment. Failure to do so will result in notifying school of your negligence.
All students are to adhere to departmental dress code which does not include: jeans, shorts, open-toed shoes, tee-shirts, perfume/cologne, and hats. Weapons, beepers, and cellular phones are prohibited (see department policy).
Field Work & Practium Experience
Opportunities are available for students to receive training in various areas of Recreation Therapy. Potential applicants must submit a cover letter and resume, noting their interest in the program and their training needs.
