Julie initially became interested in TR while volunteering at the Disabled Student Services Office. While at DSSO, she received a call from the National Wheelchair Athletic Association and became involved in the organization as a volunteer. "I met a lot of Recreation Therapists and learned more about the field."
A native of Chicago, Illinois, Julie graduated from Florida State University with a B.S. in Leisure Service and Studies. She is licensed in the state of North Carolina (LRT) and nationally certified (CTRS). Julie is also a member of NCRTA and ATRA.
Since 1980, Julie has been working with people with disabilities and professionally since June of 1989. She has been, and is currently involved with several projects/associations to include: Legislative monitor for the North Carolina Recreation Therapy Association, 1993; Board Member of the Multiple Sclerosis Society-Local Chapter - 1996; Co-Chair of the Winston-Salem Paralympic Torch Relay Run; Winston-Salem State University TR Advisory Board Facilitator, 1997; and VP of the Winston-Salem Mayor's Council for Persons With Disabilities; NCRTA Board member 2000; NCRTA President 2005; NCRTA developer of Lending Library and current Librarian; and implementing an Outdoor Adventure Program in collaboration with the Winston-Salem Parks and Recreation. Julie developed and implemented an “Outdoor Adventure” program for adults with disabilities in collaboration with Winston-Salem Recreation and Parks Department in 2000 and “Club Independence” Recreation Therapy Day Treatment Program for persons with disabling conditions in June of 2007.
She has been honored with several awards to include 1995 recipient of "Individual Helping Hand" award from the Winston-Salem Mayor's Council for Persons With Disabilities, recipient of the 1995 "Outstanding Volunteer Leadership" award from the Central North Carolina Chapter of Multiple Sclerosis Society and the 1996 "Outstanding Therapist" award from the North Carolina Recreation Therapy Association. Julie received the “Frank Brasille Clinician of the Year” award from the American Therapeutic Recreation Association and “WFUBMC Employee of the Month” in November 2007.
When not involved with her busy work schedule/projects, Julie enjoys biking, reading, volunteering, going to movies, concerts, traveling, restaurants, and tennis.
