Celia's interest in Recreation Therapy began after an experience at Camp Burnt-Gin in South Carolina, where she had the opportunity to work with children with various disabilities.
A native of Barnwell, South Carolina, Celia graduated from the University of Georgia with a B.S./Ed. (Therapeutic Recreation Emphasis). GO DAWGS!!! While a student at UGA, she was a recipient of the prestigious Peg Connally Scholarship award in 1995.
Celia began her career on the Rehabilitation Unit at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in 1996 where she then assisted with the development of the Aquatic Program.
Celia is certified by the Aquatic Therapy and Rehabilitation Institute, holds a Water Safety Instructor certificate through the American Red Cross as well as Arthritis Aquatic Instructor Certification through the Arthritis Foundation.
When Celia is not conducting individual outpatient aquatic therapy sessions with adult and pediatric clients, she can be found on the ACE Unit (Acute Care for the Elderly) providing individual therapy sessions and caregiver education. Pet Therapy is a favorite intervention for patients, family members and staff on the ACE Unit.
In addition to her clinical experience, Celia provides lectures on Aquatic Therapy principles and techniques to Physical Therapy and Physical Therapy Assistant programs at local universities such as Winston-Salem State University, Guilford Technical Community College, and North Carolina A&T. Celia also conducts lectures on the benefits of aquatic exercise for community organizations such as Best Health and Cancer Services.
To escape from her hectic work schedule, Celia enjoys collecting Longaberger baskets, playing tennis, home decorating, gardening, church activities and spending time with her family.
