Penny brings a very interesting and diverse background to the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center team. A native of Arcadia, North Carolina, Penny graduated from North Davidson High School. Penny attained her Cosmetology license from the Lexington Beauty School, and certificate in Pet grooming & Care, as well as a certificate in Phlebotomy from Rowan Technical College.
Penny been with the Recreational Therapy department since Nov. 1998. Prior to this, she has a three year history in the Rehabilitation area, worked 15 years at the Blumenthal Nursing Home as a CNA, and worked three years with the American Therapy Services as a PT/OT Rehab Technician.
Penny completed a class with the Red Cross, and is authorized to certify individuals in Adult, Child, Infant CPR and First Aide Community/Workplace training. Penny also instructs the Arthritis, Fibro, Cardio, and Senior aquatic classes offered to the adult community as well as Learn to Swim for Children at the Sticht Center Pool. In 2007 Penny began a Parent-Tot Aquatic Program for children and parents!
Penny enjoys walking and has participated in several Multiple Sclerosis and Aids walks and the Juvenile Diabetes Walk. She has volunteered with the Special Olympics and in 1984 she won first place in the CNA State Competition. Penny also participated in the Anchors Away Program, and the Adaptive Water Ski Clinic. Other interests include collecting memorabilia about wolves, especially figurines. At one time, Penny bred and raised wolves! Now she raises solid black working German shepherd’s on her farm in Axton, VA with her husband.
