The Medical Center - A Resource for the Region
As one of 126 academic medical centers in the country, The Medical Center focuses on clinical education, biomedical research, highly specialized patient care and community service.
Ranking in the top third of academic medical centers in funding from the National Institutes of Health, The Medical Center conducts clinical and basic science research aimed at discovering new diagnostic techniques and treatments to improve patient care. Major research initiatives include cardiovascular disease, cancer, stroke, aging, drug abuse, women's health and nutrition.
The 830-bed Baptist Hospital provides primary through quaternary care to very diverse patient populations. The hospital has been awarded accreditation with commendation from the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, a distinction achieved by only 12 percent of hospitals nationwide. Baptist Hospital is ranked as one of America's Best Hospitals by U.S. News and World Report in cancer, geriatrics, gynecology, neurology, orthopaedics and rheumatology. Baptist Hospital was the first hospital in the Carolinas to earn the national Magnet Award for Nursing Excellence and the first to be redesignated.
Financially sound, Baptist Hospital is one of fewer than 25 hospitals in the country to receive the highest ratings by Standard and Poor's and Moody's Investor Services.
The Medical Center's position as a market leader is confirmed through a variety of data reports, including MEDPAR data and the State Data Base Commission Reports. It is consistently ranked better than the comparative average for risk-adjusted cost, length of stay and mortality.
