Uninsured Financial Assistance

North Carolina Baptist Hospital (NCBH) is a not-for-profit hospital that is committed to providing healthcare to those in need, regardless of their ability to pay.   Wake Forest University Physicians (WFUP), is the medical group practice for Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center (WFUBMC), and functions as the exclusive medical staff for NCBH, and also serves as the clinical faculty for Wake Forest University Health Sciences (WFUHS) a not-for-profit subsidiary of Wake Forest University.

NCBH and WFUP are devoted to providing financial relief for medical expense incurred by families who do not have access to financial resources to pay for their health care services.  Relief is provided to those patients requiring medically necessary treatment after exhausting all other sources of payment or financial assistance.  Below is a summary of our charity care and financial assistance programs:

  • Charity Care Discounts are determined using criteria such as income, asset and other fund sources availability, considered in relation to the nature and the extent of medical services required.  Based upon these criteria, patients will be eligible to receive a discount of 50, 75 or 100 percent of the patient’s responsibility, if their calculated gross annual income is between 200 to 400 percent of the most recently published Health and Human Services Federal Poverty Guidelines.
  • Uninsured patients who receive services at North Carolina Baptist Hospital and/or Wake Forest University Physicians that do not qualify for a charity discount (NCBH and WFUP Charity Care Policy) and agree to comply with specified conditions, are eligible to take advantage of NCBH and WFUP’s policy to offer a 20% prompt pay discount off full charges.  The uninsured discount applies only to uninsured patients and does not apply to patients who receive services at NCBH and/or WFUP pursuant to a managed care contract agreement; patient balances owed by patients who are covered by State or Federal programs; patients who qualify for a charity care discount; single patient agreements; international patients, cosmetic procedures, optical services, in vitro fertilization, or experimental or investigational and package priced procedures.
  • Payment Plans may be available to patients based on the amount due and the patient’s financial status.  Payment plans can be established prior to, at the time of, or after services have occurred.  For payment plans established prior to or at time of service, the first month’s payment must be made to establish the plan and the patient must not have any outstanding bills with NCBH or WFUP.
  • Catastrophic discounts are available to patients with a balance over $5,000 and whose income is over 300 percent of the Federal Poverty Level.  This includes patients with health insurance coverage.
