Resource Center: Women's Health Materials for Medical Professionals and the Community

Our Resource Center is located within the WHCoE [location].  We provide topical fact sheets in quantities of up to 100 per topic, for local health fairs and women's group meetings. Call us at 336-713-4220 if you have a meeting you would like women's health educational materials or visit our Fact Sheets page for our online versions.

Hormone Therapy

Millions of women were shocked when one arm of the largest clinical trial on hormone therapy, the Women's Health Initiative (WHI) Hormone Therapy Trial, came to an abrupt stop in May, 2002. The results from this study showed that women taking combined hormone therapy, estrogen and progestin, were at increased risk for blood clots, breast cancer, heart disease and stroke. The study also showed a decrease in risk for osteoporosis and colorectal cancer in those women taking combination therapy. A sub-study of WHI, WHIMS (Women's Health Initiative Memory Study) found that women taking the combination therapy were at greater risk for dementia.
