The Women’s Health Center of Excellence for Research, Leadership, Education (WHCoE) is committed to the promotion of women’s health and we know that the recruitment of future top-notch researchers and physicians begins at the undergraduate level of college.
The WHCoE coordinates women's health internships between Wake Forest University School of Medicine (WFUSM) researchers and healthcare providers and undergraduate students from area colleges who are looking for projects for course credit.

To inquire about submitting or applying for an internship project or if you have any additional questions about the program, please contact Diana Cornelison at dcorneli@wfubmc.edu.

Internship Procedures for Undergraduate Students
and Project Managers

The following information is important. Please be sure to take note of all steps!

STUDENT TASK LIST

STEP 1: Review the current projects list. Please note that each project is managed within individual departments. Details about the specific internship duties, scheduling, amount of time that the student will spend working on project and the student’s class requirements will be discussed and/or decided upon during an interview.

Step 2: Contact Diana Cornelison at dcorneli@wfubmc.edu to initiate the internship process. Please send a minimum of two projects that you are interested in.

Step 3: Diana Cornelison will send the contact for the project managers of the projects of interest. The student will contact the project manager to arrange a convenient interview time. Students and project managers need to discuss class requirements, the number of work hours required, work schedule & job requirements.

Step 4: If the student is accepted as an intern, the Agreement for Non-Employees and Non-Employee Hazard Assessment forms need to be completed with the project manager. These forms must be turned in to Human Resources at least two days before the student’s scheduled orientation session.  Human Resources is located in Piedmont Plaza I, 5th Floor at 1920 West First Street, Winston Salem, NC 27104 (map).

Step 5: The student must obtain their current Immunization Records and TB test from their physician and give a copy to Human Resources together with the forms mentioned above.

Step 6: Students are required to attend an OSHA Orientation Session the Monday before the internship is scheduled to begin.  These orientation sessions are held every Monday (unless a holiday) 1-4 pm in the Kitty Hawk Conference Room of Piedmont Plaza I, 1st Floor. IMPORTANT: This is the only time that the orientation sessions are offered so if you cannot attend, you cannot participate in an internship! Please note that some additional training may be required depending on the project, i.e. lab safety, clinical hazard training, etc.

Arrive 30 minutes before orientation session to obtain a badge and parking pass from Human Resources, Piedmont Plaza I, 5th Floor

PROJECT MANAGER TASK LIST

Submitting a Project and Initiating the Internship:

Step 1: Interns begin their semester-long internships in September and January. We also have students requesting summer internship opportunities.  If you have a women’s health or gender differences related project that could use the assistance of an undergraduate student, please contact Diana Cornelison via email (dcorneli@wfubmc.edu) with:

·   Project title

·   A brief description (2-3 sentences), including what tasks the student will be doing

·   The number of interns the project can accommodate

·   Contact person with phone number and email address

Step 2: When a student expresses interest in a project, the project manager will be contacted by Diana Cornelison with the student’s information. If the manager wishes to interview the student, they are requested to notify Ms. Cornelison. She will pass the contact information along to the internship candidate, who will contact the project manager to arrange a meeting time.

Step 3: The project manager will meet with the student to discuss details about the project, further details about internship duties, scheduling, time that the student will spend working on project and the student’s class requirements. If the manager decides that the student is a good match for the project and the student agrees, the manager will please notify Diana Cornelison at dcorneli@wfubmc.edu.

Step 4: A start date needs to be established for the new intern and the HR Agreement for Non-Employees and EH&S Non-Employee Hazard Assessment forms need to be completed.

Step 5: Each student MUST go through Human Resources (HR) and Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) orientation BEFORE they can begin their internship.  Each project manager is responsible for ensuring the necessary HR and EH&S paperwork has been completed and turned in at least two days before the student’s scheduled orientation session.

Step 6: Begin internship. Note: The WHCoE serves strictly as a means for students and project managers to connect with one another. Once an internship is established, all issues must be resolved between the student and project manager.
