Foundation Announcements
The Nancy R. Gelman Foundation announces its 2009 Seed Grant Program. We are extremely pleased to fund projects aimed at improving outcomes for women with breast cancer by promoting global improvement in services provided to women with or at risk of breast cancer.

Open Meadows Foundation is a grant-making organization for projects that are led by and benefit women and girls. It offers grants up to $2000 to projects that: (1) Are designed and implemented by women and girls; (2) Reflect the diversity of the community served by the project in both its leadership and organization; (3) Promote building community power; (4) Promote racial, social, economic and environmental justice; (5) Have limited financial access or have encountered obstacles in their search for funding. Organizational budget should not exceed $150,000. Small and start-up organizations are strongly encouraged to apply. Annual deadlines are February 15 and August 15. http://www.openmeadows.org
Susan G. Komen for the Cure has completed its transition to a schedule in which recurring research RFAs will be announced each April and May, and training RFAs will be announced each September. Announcements about additional special topic RFAs may be made at other times during the year. Applications are now invited for the following research RFAs:
~ Investigator Initiated Research Grants will provide up to $600,000 over three years to support research exploring new ideas and novel approaches leading to reductions in breast cancer incidence and/or mortality within the decade.
~ Career Catalyst Research and Career Catalyst in Disparities Research Grants will provide up to $450,000 over three years to support combined programs of research and mentoring that will further research independence for scientists in the early stages of their career.

The Avon Foundation has launched an initiative called the Avon Breast Cancer Research Bridge Program to provide bridge funding to scientists with innovative concepts in breast cancer while they develop the pilot data necessary to seek funding from larger sources, such as the NIH or NCI. Pfizer offers Medical and Academic Partnership (MAP) grants. On their Web site, you will find information about 14 MAP grant and award programs which provide financial support for fellows, scholars, and host institutions in a wide range of therapeutic areas, health literacy topics, and public health issues. Recipients of these nationally competitive MAP grants are selected by independent academic advisory boards made up of leaders in each program’s field. The main goal of the Americas Fellowship in Reproductive Sciences (AFRS) is to advance the training of qualified Latin American reproductive scientists by enhancing their basic or clinical research skills in a research setting in the U.S. and Canada. The objective of AFRS is to prepare awardees for future leadership positions in research, academia or public health institutions in their home country. Applicants must demonstrate that, upon completion of the fellowship, they will have the opportunity to use their newly acquired skills to pursue reproductive sciences research, and to teach or direct others in reproduction research in their home country.
The AMA-WPC Joan F. Giambalvo Memorial Scholarship Fund
The American Medical Association (AMA), through its Women Physicians Congress (WPC), has established the Joan F. Giambalvo Memorial Scholarship Fund to advance the progress of women in the medical profession and strengthen the ability of the AMA to identify and address the needs of women physicians and medical students. Intensive 5-day workshops combine expert instruction with practical exercises to take you step-by-step through all the stages of planning programs, locating funding sources, and writing grant proposals. Participants' current needs and programs are the basis of all class research and proposal writing exercises. Design and Analysis Unit
The Design and Analysis Unit (DAU) is a new component of the Research Support Core in the Office of Research (OR). It is designed to provide collaborative advice and services in the areas of study design, data analysis, data entry, and data management. It is a collaboration between the OR and the Department of Biostatistical Sciences. DAU services include both pre-and post-award statistical work, and will be tailored to investigators’ needs.
